Pungapunga Island

Whangapoua

Auckland

Lucy, 10

My hands shook violently as I looked down at the 10 metre drop below me. My eyes followed the swell as it crashed up against the jagged rocks and back down again. I jumped . . . plummeting down towards the choppy sea, imagining what it would be like when I hit the cold hard surface of the ocean. I screamed and my mouth filled up with salty water as I cut into the sea like a knife. I gulped for air, and stared back up at the island. That was an experience I would never forget, the island I had my eyes glued to, was my special place.
